1969 Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet

An original “Q” code fastback Mach 1 automatic, with fascinating provenance and sympathetic upgrades making this big block car superbly driveable.

This 1969 Gulfstream Aqua Mach 1 with black comfortweave interior and automatic transmission has a documented history going back to the 1980’s. Featured as a cover story in the July 2014 issue of Classic American describing its unique history, “Mach the Knife” was bought from a second-hand car lot by a California high school student as his first car, and became his signature ride as he graduated into a life of crime up to his arrest and imprisonment a few years later. Not wanting to part with his car, and dreaming hopelessly of getting it back one day, the Mach 1 was boarded up in his fathers’ garage in Milpitas, California until bought by a local collector some 25 years later. Restored in Redwood City, California, the Mach 1 made its way to Holland to a well-known Mustang specialist where it was sold to a collector in Barcelona, Spain. The present owner acquired the car five years ago.
With a view to creating a GT touring car for Europe’s roads that would be at home both in the city and on continental  motorways, while managing reliably the awesome power and torque of the famous 428 CI CobraJet engine, a programme of sympathetic easily-reversible upgrades was undertaken by The Mustang Workshop Ltd under the expert guidance of Roy Holmes, and included:

  • Full Dakota Digital dashboard instrumentation to give accurate and reliable engine metrics
  • Gear Vendors Under/Overdrive unit fitted to the C6 auto box giving either 4th gear overdrive, or overdrive in each gear, effectively a 6-speed auto box
  • 3.0 final drive on Detroit locker rear giving 2500 rpm at 80MPH
  • Willwood 6 Pot Dynalite front disc brake up-grade
  • 15 x 7” front Torque Thruster 2 wheels with 15 x 8” rears
  • Enhanced radiator with Evans waterless coolant
  • Discreet 428 CobraJet emblems replacing stock quarter panel medallions
  • Fully functional Shaker hood
  • Carpeted boot
  • Modern space-saver spare tyre
  • All maintenance while in the UK carried out by The Mustang Workshop Ltd

This Mach 1 has the desirable fold down rear seat and louvered rear screen, and is a pleasure to drive having completed road trips through France and Spain to attend Mustang club events over the years. When not in use, that car is stored in a specialist facility.

Equally at home in city traffic and in the motorway fast lane, this is an opportunity to acquire a rare but usable collector Mustang that can  be enjoyed safely and reliably today.
